2 Montagnac Cloth
A curly woollen fabric with an astrakhan-like pile. It is very soft, warm and durable. It is produced in France and was first discovered in 1864. The inventor. Baron de Montagnac, discovered how to produce the material by accident - simply by soaking the cloth from the loom in water, then beating it with a heavy cane, he obtained the peculiar curly pile. The cloth is now manufactured on a large scale. Imitation Montagnac cloth is made 72-in. wide, 28 ends and 50 picks per inch, weight 29-02. per yard, from 13/4 run warp and weft. The weave is on 6 ends and 12 picks. -
3 Chlorinated Cloth
Wool fabrics are treated in a chlorine solution to make them non-shrinkable when washed. The cloth when so treated is termed chlorinated. The treatment also increases the yarn's affinity for dyestufls and the dyed yarn is much deeper in colour than if untreated. This property is used to produce pattern from the same yarn by using chlorinated and untreated threads to obtain two tones of the same colour. This chlorinating process is also used for grey wool yams in order to make them non-shrinkable. -

8 Macintosh, Charles
[br]b. 29 December 1766 Glasgow, Scotlandd. 25 July 1843 Dunchattan, near Glasgow, Scotland[br]Scottish inventor of rubberized waterproof clothing.[br]As the son of the well-known and inventive dyer George Macintosh, Charles had an early interest in chemistry. At the age of 19 he gave up his work as a clerk with a Glasgow merchant to manufacture sal ammoniac (ammonium chloride) and developed new processes in dyeing. In 1797 he started the first Scottish alum works, finding the alum in waste shale from coal mines. His first works was at Hurlet, Renfrewshire, and was followed later by others. He then formed a partnership with Charles Tennant, the proprietor of a chemical works at St Rollox, near Glasgow, and sold "lime bleaching liquor" made with chlorine and milk of lime from their bleach works at Darnley. A year later the use of dry lime to make bleaching powder, a process worked out by Macintosh, was patented. Macintosh remained associated with Tennant's St Rollox chemical works until 1814. During this time, in 1809, he had set up a yeast factory, but it failed because of opposition from the London brewers. There was a steady demand for the ammonia that gas works produced, but the tar was often looked upon as an inconvenient waste product. Macintosh bought all the ammonia and tar that the Glasgow works produced, using the ammonia in his establishment to produce cudbear, a dyestuff extracted from various lichens. Cudbear could be used with appropriate mordants to make shades from pink to blue. The tar could be distilled to produce naphtha, which was used as a flare. Macintosh also became interested in ironmaking. In 1825 he took out a patent for converting malleable iron into steel by taking it to white heat in a current of gas with a carbon content, such as coal gas. However, the process was not commercially successful because of the difficulty keeping the furnace gas-tight. In 1828 he assisted J.B. Neilson in bringing hot blast into use in blast furnaces; Neilson assigned Macintosh a share in the patent, which was of dubious benefit as it involved him in the tortuous litigation that surrounded the patent until 1843.In June 1823, as a result of experiments into the possible uses of naphtha obtained as a by-product of the distillation of coal tar, Macintosh patented his process for waterproofing fabric. This comprised dissolving rubber in naphtha and applying the solution to two pieces of cloth which were afterwards pressed together to form an impermeable compound fabric. After an experimental period in Glasgow, Macintosh commenced manufacture in Manchester, where he formed a partnership with H.H.Birley, B.Kirk and R.W.Barton. Birley was a cotton spinner and weaver and was looking for ways to extend the output of his cloth. He was amongst the first to light his mills with gas, so he shared a common interest with Macintosh.New buildings were erected for the production of waterproof cloth in 1824–5, but there were considerable teething troubles with the process, particularly in the spreading of the rubber solution onto the cloth. Peter Ewart helped to install the machinery, including a steam engine supplied by Boulton \& Watt, and the naphtha was supplied from Macintosh's works in Glasgow. It seems that the process was still giving difficulties when Thomas Hancock, the foremost rubber technologist of that time, became involved in 1830 and was made a partner in 1834. By 1836 the waterproof coat was being called a "mackintosh" [sic] and was gaining such popularity that the Manchester business was expanded with additional premises. Macintosh's business was gradually enlarged to include many other kinds of indiarubber products, such as rubber shoes and cushions.[br]Principal Honours and DistinctionsFRS 1823.Further ReadingG.Macintosh, 1847, Memoir of Charles Macintosh, London (the fullest account of Charles Macintosh's life).T.Hancock, 1957, Narrative of the Indiarubber Manufacture, London.H.Schurer, 1953, "The macintosh: the paternity of an invention", Transactions of the Newcomen Society 28:77–87 (an account of the invention of the mackintosh).RLH / LRD -

10 Marseilles Quilts
A compound fabric consisting of two plain cloths joined together by a figuring warp to produce a pattern. Between the two cloths is inserted wadding weft of coarse yarn. A jacquard machine and heald shafts are required to weave the cloth. The healds weave the plain cloth, while the patterning ends are operated by the jacquard. Each pattern card serves for ten picks, viz., four picks of fine weft for the face cloth, four from the same shuttle for the back cloth, and two picks of coarse weft for wadding. The cloth can be woven from one beam, but two beams allow the tension on the stitching threads to be more correctly adjusted. The various qualities are termed 4-pick, 5-pick, etc., according to the number of picks woven for each jacquard card. One cloth is made 72 face ends 1/100's, 24 back ends, 20's, 40 face picks 32's, 40 back picks 32's, and 20 wadding picks 16's per inch, all cotton yarns. This cloth is an imitation of an Eastern fabric used as quilts, and made from a pure plain woven cloth, two pieces of the cloth being placed together one on the top of the other, and a thick cotton wadding placed between, the whole being stitched together by hand. Where no stitches were used the cloth bulged owing to the wadding between. -

15 Beetle
A machine employed to give the " Beetle Finish " to cloths by delivering a rapid succession of blows from a number of wooden hammers upon the cloth wound upon rollers or cylinders. Each hammer beats the fabric about 72 times a minute, and owing to the lateral movement of the cloth, each blow is at a different point on the cloth. The objects are to close up the threads, produce a bright hard finish and give the cloth a surface water-mark. Also see Imitation Beetle Finish under Calendering. -
16 Beetling Machine

17 Double Cloths
A general term applied to many textures in which two fabrics each with its own warp and weft are combined together. The primary object is to produce a heavier cloth than could be done in a single texture, without spoiling the fineness and the weave of the face cloth. Very often the face weave is quite different from that of the back. In woollens, and overcoatings in particular, double cloth weaving permits the production of fancy checks on the back, while the face cloth is finer in appearance. Sometimes the back is made plainer and heavier than the face, principally to add bulk to the fabric. The illustration shows a woollen material with a check face and twill back. -
18 Imitation Backed Fabrics
This class of fabric is largely used in the wool industry for making coatings and dress fabrics of a medium weight. They are really the backs of corkscrew weaves stitched to produce reasonable imitations of common twills on the back of the fabric. All ends and picks weave on both sides of the cloth. Most simple weaves can be re-arranged to produce an appearance similar to a backed cloth and all weaves arranged on the warp principle will be applicable for the weft principle when turned round.Dictionary of the English textile terms > Imitation Backed Fabrics

19 Muri
Raised needlework in Chikans, and includes native work in many parts of India in which the material itself is covered with stitches to produce a raised effect. The predominating motive in Chikan designs is floral, though butterflies, baskets and birds are also depicted. Whatever the design or pattern, it is first outlined in Muri. The material within these outlines may then be embellished with Jali or Katau, or may be worked over -with Muri without any drawing-out of threads or cutting away of fabric. Muri is done from the right side of the cloth and may be worked either with one or more threads of ordinary cotton according to the nature of the embroidery required, or with thick mercerised cotton thread, the needle being moved backwards and forwards until the vacant space has been covered with the desired thickness of embroidery. Muri work is also used in floral patterns to outline stalks in stem stitch and to represent leaves by patches of embroidery. Arekhal and Patar are varieties of Muri, differing only in thickness of the embroidery. Dhum and Chumki are varieties of Muri in which a different effect is achieved by making stitches at different angles. Bakhia is a variety of Muri, but is done from the wrong side of the cloth. The threads of the cloth are drawn together as in Jali, and ordinary or mercerised thread is used as in Muri, the result being that instead of small holes the right side of the cloth presents a series of blobs or small compact masses of embroidery. -
